What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment? (OMT)

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, or OMT, is a set of techniques used by Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine to diagnose, treat and prevent illness and injury.

Using OMT, a DO moves a patient’s muscles and joints using techniques including stretching, gentle pressure and resistance.

OMT can help patients of all ages and backgrounds. Although it is often used to treat muscle pain, it can also help provide relief for asthma, sinus disorders, migraines and carpal tunnel syndrome.

In many cases, the treatment can be used to complement, or even replace, drugs or surgery.

The DO Difference

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, or DOs, believe there’s more to good health than the absence of pain or disease. As guardians of wellness, DOs focus on prevention by gaining a deeper understanding of your lifestyle and environment, rather than just treating your symptoms.

Listening to you and partnering in your care are at the heart of our holistic, empathic approach to medicine. We are trained to promote the body’s natural tendency toward health and self-healing. We practice according to the latest science and use the latest technology. But we also consider options to complement pharmaceuticals and surgery.

There are more than 120,000 DOs in the US, practicing their distinct philosophy in every medical specialty. We have additional training in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and use this tool to help diagnose, treat and prevent illness and injury.

Who Can Benefit From OMT?

OMT can help people of all ages and backgrounds. It can:

  • ease pain
  • promote healing
  • increase mobility

OMT is often used to treat muscle pain. But it can also help patients with a number of other health problems such as:

  • Asthma
  • Sinus Disorder
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Syndrom
  • Migraines
  • Menstrual Pain

When appropriate, OMT can complement––and even replace––drugs or surgery. In this way, OMT brings an important dimension to standard medical care.
