OMT SKILLS LAB: An Introductory Course in Functional and Indirect Techniques

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This three-day immersive course introduces osteopathic medical professionals to the principles and practice of indirect and functional techniques. Participants will explore the theoretical foundations and practical application of methods such as Counterstrain, Indirect Myofascial Release (iMFR), Facilitated Positional Release (FPR), and Balanced Ligamentous Tension (BLT). Emphasis will be placed on diagnostic strategies, integration of indirect techniques into treatment planning, and the art of clinical decision-making. The course fosters precision, adaptability, and therapeutic presence through hands-on labs and case-based learning.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the theoretical underpinnings of indirect and functional osteopathic techniques.
  • Differentiate between direct and indirect approaches, and describe the concepts of ease, bind, and somatic dysfunction.
  • Demonstrate basic diagnostic screening using standing, seated, and supine assessment strategies.
  • Apply the principles and techniques of Counterstrain, iMFR, FPR, and BLT in lab settings.
  • Recognize when and how to shift between techniques based on the needs of the patient.
  • Describe the decision-making process involved in precision diagnostics within osteopathic manual therapy.
  • Conduct a clinically relevant osteopathic case history.
